In response to a large fire in Placencia Village that resulted in the destruction of several building that housed businesses and residences, a group of concerned citizens working with the Rotary Club of Placencia undertook the task of forming a volunteer fire department in 2007. Under the direction of Fire Chief Kathy Anglin, the Peninsula Volunteer Fire Department has provided training, through regular practices, for numerous volunteers and secured, through many donations, equipment that has improved fire protection in the area. The department has grown from a group of volunteers in Placencia Village to now include volunteers in Seine Bight Village (north of Placencia Village on the Peninsula) and plans to expand north on the peninsula to Riversdale as manpower and equipment becomes available. This growth has also included the establishment of a Fire Board charged with the ovesight of the Department and provision of liason servcies with the government agencies.

As the largest project undertaken to date by the Rotary Club of Placencia, we are proud fo what has been accomplished, however, we realize that much still needs to be done to accomplish our goal of providing fire protection to the Placencia Peninsula. Future plans include construction of fire stations, one of which is to include a trauma center, in various loactions on the Peninsula; acquisition of additional equipment from pumps, hoses and basic safety equipment to fire fighting vehicles; establishment of radio system; and promotion of training to increase the number of volunteer firefighters available at any given time to respond to emergencies.
Currently, Fire Department and Fire Board are working to develop a long term plan, including a list of equipment that is needed now as well as equipment that will be needed in the furture.
